June 25--CLEARWATER -- Nothing says summer like lazy days by the pool and late-night movies, and Pinellas County offers plenty of opportunities to combine the two without breaking the bank.
The Southwest Recreation Complex and Pool in Largo will show $5 movies ($4 for residents), every Friday from July 12 to July 26 at 9 p.m. The film series kicks off with "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax," July 12 and on July 19 will feature "School of Rock." Tickets also include hot dogs, contests and prize giveaways.
Families can watch "Brave," at 8 p.m. July 25, at Northwest Pool on 60th St. N. in St. Petersburg while lounging on complimentary floats. Admission is $3.50 for ages 3 to 12 and $4 for those 13 and older; flume rides and diving boards will be open. v
For $4, families can watch movies from water slides and pool floats at the St. Pete Beach Community Center & Aquatic Complex after 8 p.m. On Friday, the pool will screen "SpongeBob Square Pants: The Movie" and "Space Jam" on July 12.
On dry land, Muvico's Free Summer Film Fest will show a different family-friendly movie every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. through Aug. 15th at all Tampa Bay area locations, including St. Petersburg's Baywalk 20 and the Palm Harbor 10. This week, the theaters are screening "Rise of the Guardians."
Regal Cinema's Summer Movie Express costs theatergoers $1 admission for its children movies shown at 10 a.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday at Citrus Park 20, Largo Mall 8 and Park Place Stadium 16 in Pinellas Park. This week, the theater is screening "Mr. Poppers' Penguins" and next week will show "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked."
Those looking for an edgier cinema experience can head to the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg for Movies on the Patio at 7 p.m. for cult classics hosted by female impersonator Kori Stevens. Audience members are encouraged to dress in movie attire for free showings of "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" on July 16 and "The Big Lebowski" on Aug. 20. A cash bar, food trucks and plenty of popcorn will be on hand.
No summer date night would be complete without a trip to the Sunset Cinema at Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach. Throughout June and July, every Friday and Saturday after dusk audience members can lounge on the sand while watching free films such as Friday's "The Pirates: Band of Misfits" and Saturday's "Land of the Lost."
