Gary David Goldberg, 'Family Ties' Writer, Dies

"Family Ties" and "Spin City" writer-producer Gary David Goldberg died of brain cancer at his home in Montecito, Calif., his family said. He was 68.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed his Sunday death.

In addition to working on Michael J. Fox's two popular sitcoms, Goldberg also wrote and directed the films "Dad" and "Must Love Dogs" and was the founder and head of Ubu Productions.

The New York native and two-time Emmy Award winner also was a producer on the drama series "Lou Grant" and wrote episodes of "The Bob Newhart Show" and "M*A*S*H," The Hollywood Reporter said.
