Fans have tried to give me their hotel room key ...it's so 70s Tom Jones ; Josh Groban's career has gone from strength to strength after his first big break, appearing in TV series Ally McBeal in 2001 but he still has ambitions to achieve as MARION MCMULLEN discovers

"I don't feel I have to abide by the rules of marketing and hype and being in the top 40 because I've been able to play by my own rules. You can't do that if your audience isn't there with you."

But he laughingly reveals he sometimes gets odd gifts from some fans. "Every now and then, you'll get the odd plush toy or hotel room key. That's so 1970s Tom Jones! As if I'm going to take this key and stop off in some hotel with someone I don't even know!" Josh rose to fame after appearing in TV series Ally McBeal in 2001 and describes it as a "serendipitous moment".

"I was working on my first record but had no idea how we would promote it at that point - it was very different to everything else in the market.

Josh with style "After I sung at an event, the show's creator David E Kelley asked me to sing on the show. I was going to sing for three minutes at the end of the episode, then Robert Downey Jr got arrested and I got to be in the whole thing."

Josh has gone on to appear alongside Emma Stone in Crazy, Stupid Love - "It wasn't a bad day at the office to be able to share scenes with her all day" - and says he would like to do more acting."

SAYING it with flowers proved just a little too painful for American singing star Josh Groban. Fans in Russia showered him with bouquets at a concert, but the flowery tribute left Josh dripping in blood.

"In Moscow, between every song, there would be a line of people with bouquets of flowers who would come up to the stage to hand them to me," he explains. "It was the sweetest thing ever but I would be holding all these flowers in my hand, and the flowers had thorns so there was blood dripping down my arms.

"I swear to God, it was the oddest, sweetest thing I've ever experienced."

The 32-year-old singer has been touring the UK and his album All That Echoes has become his third Billboard number one.

"I like to make sure the shows are really fun and energetic," he says. "I have one of the best bands on stage with me - their standard of musicianship every night is extraordinary. We want everybody to have a great time.

"I also like to make the audience laugh. The funnier I can make the shows in between the songs, the better."

So what is the secret of Josh's success? "For such a quick- moving business, it can be fickle," he agrees, "so to be able to come out with a sixth album and know the fans are right there is testament to the connection I have with them and the freedom they've given me.

"I don't feel I have to abide by the rules of marketing and hype and being in the top 40 because I've been able to play by my own rules. You can't do that if your audience isn't there with you."

The Los Angeles-born musician says he is already starting to think about his next album and has the next two albums planned out in his head.

"There are always new dream singing partners," he says. "I've been very fortunate in my life to have sung with so many of them.

"I've always said I want to work with Bjork - I think she would be really interesting. I love working with instrumentalists and would love to work with Yo-Yo Ma. In the pop field, Adele would be great. There have been some wonderful unexpected collaborations. Those are the ones I like the best."

That would be fun. I love to play tennis and I'm not very good so I just live vicariously through Andy Murray."

On a more serious note, he says: "I would like to compose a film score one day, learn how to cook, settle down and have a family. It's a future goal - it's not really happening at the moment, but some day I want to get off the road."
