June 21--Green. That's always been a color that Tommy Chong has loved throughout his career. Now, 35 years after releasing his first feature film, "Up in Smoke," with his comedy partner Cheech Marin it's again something green that's brings him on tour.
"It's all about the money," he quips during an interview while playing golf. "All kidding aside, it's what we do. If your dad's a plumber, he goes out to work and fixes things. We are comedians and do our show and in order to do our job, we have to be on the road."
Chong and Marin make up the comedy duo Cheech & Chong. The duo rose to fame during the 1970s and 1980s for their films and stand-up comedy routines. The routines were based on the hippie and free-love era, and touched on drug and counterculture movements.
They had No. 1 films at the box office, and won Grammy Awards for their comedy albums.
The duo's current stint, "The Joint Venture Tour," has been taking them around the country.
"The show is a combination of humor and music," Chong says. "It works well with the ADD crowds. Just when they get ready to yell something stupid, we change it up on them."
In nearly 40 years of performing, Cheech & Chong have become cultural icons.
Chong says when the duo started, they never thought about their careers lasting for so long.
"To tell you the truth, I never think past next week," he says. "I live by the moment and then next think, you know, the moments add up."
Chong says having a place in pop culture is amazing and the duo never expected that either.
"We have fans of all ages," he says. "We've become such a big part of everybody's life. It's also an honor to be known as 'America's Favorite Stoners.'"
The duo starred in 14 films and Chong says if the right script came along for another, they would do it.
"The cool thing about right now in our lives is that we don't have to do anything," he says. "We've worked hard and we can rest on our laurels and collect the royalties."
