LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwired) -- 06/19/13 -- This year the Shambhala coaster celebrates its first birthday. The ride, in Spanish theme park PortAventura, is three minutes of thrills from the height of a twelve-storey building into an almighty splash at the end. So if you're looking for an adrenaline rush on your holiday this summer, look no further.
One of the world's great theme parks, PortAventura in Salou, recently opened its latest attraction to visitors - the gigantic Shambhala coaster. Towering a staggering 76 metres above ground level, it's the highest of its kind in Europe, and with a drop rate of 6 metres a second, one of the fastest too. The ride takes inspiration from the mysterious kingdom of Bhutan, and is so big that it can be seen for miles around. PortAventura estimates that more than 15,000 visitors rode it on the opening weekend, and it's our guess that more than 15,000 people rushed back to the start of the queue for another go!
The Shambhala is everything that aficionados of roller-coasters could hope for and more, but it's only the start of PortAventura's many attractions, which have made this park one of Spain's most enduringly popular holiday destinations. AttractionTix offer incredible deals for PortAventura among many other great Spanish locations.
Shambhala is part of a huge, GBP 10 million enlargement of the Costa Caribe aquatic park, placing it at the forefront of European adventure holidays. Next to the Shambhala can be found a six-lane competition coaster, where riders take mats on a bumpy journey down to the pool, and a fantastic new Pirate Ship attraction for the kids to enjoy, full of fun activities. A tropical adult's pool, offering invigorating swims and a waterfall, continues the Caribbean theme, and there are renovated relaxation and eating areas too.
As with most theme parks of this size, PortAventura is separated into several themed areas, each of which offering their own attractions. Most of the really exciting rides are found in the Mexico section, while Polynesia offers a much more chilled-out vibe, and the Far West area features classic rides such as the Rapids, a traditional wooden rollercoaster and a water flume.
On top of everything else, there are also many seasonal and special events that showcase live music, choreographed dancing, and of course fireworks in the park. And the stunning beaches of the Costa Dorada, plus the myriad charms of Barcelona, are only a short drive away.
