June 19--Two and a half hours late to the official announcement of the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival's (MMFF) eight official entries for 2013, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino tried his hand at wit to apologize for his delay, Tuesday afternoon.
Apparently, Tolentino was held up at a meeting with President Benigno Aquino 3rd for hours regarding the horrendous traffic caused by the floods in Metro Manila on Monday evening, and was even called back to return to the Palace when he had already left for the press conference in Quezon City.
"Tulad po ng Habagat, ang MMFF ay hindi natin maiiwasan," he said to a roomful of movie producers, directors and members of the press at Dulcinea restaurant in Tomas Morato.
He went on to commend the industry for yet another batch of quality entries -- 15 in total -- from which the eight scripts were chosen by the MMFF Executive Committee, declaring, "Walang ubos ang pagdaloy ng talento at sining ng pelikulang Pilipino, mula producer, direktor at mga artista."
Tolentino, however, announced that the committee's earlier plans of featuring an Animation Category in the annual festival will have to be postponed for December's showing and awards ceremony.
"Hindi natin narating ang animation category but I'm sure we will in the years to come," he said. "Mahirap palang gawin yon -- hindi kaya ng overnight, tulad ng solusyon sa flood control."
He gave the assurance, however, that with the 70 flood drainage systems being constructed by the DPWH, flooding in Metro Manila will be resolved in the near future.
"Pero sa ngayon, hanggang hindi matatapos ang construction nitong mga drainage systems na ito, merong tayo g mararanasang baha, at meron tayomg mararanasang traffic."
Finally, the chairman returned to the order of the day and announced the following films as the eight official finalists to the coming MMFF:
