Out & About: Papa Grows Funk in Martinsville [Roanoke Times (Roanoke, VA)]

June 17, 2013

A renowned New Orleans band is making a final funky round of shows that will bring it to Martinsville on Wednesday.

Papa Grows Funk, led by the Hammond B3 work of band founder John Gros, is scheduled for a show at the Rives Theatre. It will be the first, and likely last, stop for the band in that town. PGF announced in January that after 13 years together, it is taking an "indefinite break" for the members to pursue other music.

The act is no stranger to the Roanoke Valley. Papa Grows Funk played the old Mix One6 in 2008, and the Coffee Pot last July. In between, it was part of the 2010 Virginia Blues and Jazz Festival lineup, at Warm Springs' Garth Newel Music Center.

The band, which has been a regular main stage performer at such New Orleans events as Jazz Fest, includes one member who appeared on the HBO series "Treme." Guitarist June Yamagishi played a respected guitarist, naturally, whose performance elicits a vulgarity of delight from Wendell Pierce's character, Antoine Batiste. Yamagishi has also played with the Stanton Moore Trio and the Wild Magnolias.
