BRUNSWICK -- "Les Miserables" will be brought back by popular demand to Maine State Music Theatre from June 26-July 13.
Based on the 1862 novel by Victor Hugo, "Les Miserables" tells the musical tale of redemption and revolution in early 19th-century France.
Ex-convict and fugitive, Jean Valjean, known by his prison number 24601, is pitted against the tenacious Inspector Javert in a lifelong struggle to evade capture. This deeply personal tale which follows the change in a man from sinner to saint, plays out against a historical backdrop of unparalleled scale as French students fight to free the oppressed lower class.
Love for another and for one's country, battle hatred and injustice result in both triumph and tragedy for those who wage the war, but cannot escape his dark past as he tries to save himself and those around him.
The award-winning score composed by Claude-Michel Schonberg, with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and a book by Alain Boublil, is as noteworthy and spectacular as the story itself. The score, which has inspired numerous cast recordings and received two Grammy Awards, features such notable songs as "I Dreamed a Dream," "Who Am I?," "Master of the House," "On My Own," "Do You Hear the People Sing?," "One Day More," and the show-stopping, "Bring Him Home."
Edward Reichert will provide musical direction for "Les Miserables." Reichert is a long-time MSMT collaborator of 22 seasons and on faculty in the School of Music at USM where he teaches and directs in their musical theater program.
This exciting, passionate musical experience will be directed by MSMT favorite Marc Robin and featuring a multi-talented cast of professional performers from New York City and around the country.
Performances will be held at the Pickard Theater at Bowdoin College. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 207- 725-8769 or by visiting www.msmt.org.
