June 16, 2013

June 16--1. The Carper Family at Waterloo Records

5 p.m. Monday. Free. 600 N. Lamar Blvd. 512-474-2500, www.waterloorecords.com.

The trio celebrates the release of "Old-Fashioned Gal," which was produced by Cindy Cashdollar. In a story published earlier this month in Austin360, we noted that Cashdollar, who had never produced a record for another artist before, said she was a big fan of the group's throwback country sound. "I know them well, both personally and professionally, and that trifecta is really strong," she said of upright bassist Melissa Carper, fiddler Beth Chrisman and guitarist Jenn Miori.

Cashdollar helped them expand their range, and although guest musicians were brought in (Cashdollar plays on the record, too), they all made sure the music could be performed live by just the three of them.

2. Finale of Uchi's "Chopped"-style competition

6 p.m. Monday $75. AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center, 1900 University Ave. www.chefsunderfire.com.

Eat, drink and cheer on the four finalists of Uchi's Citywide86'd competition. They'll fight for the final win by preparing three dishes, an appetizer, an entree and dessert, using often random, pre-selected ingredients, a la Food Network's popular reality show "Chopped." Staff from various Austin restaurants have been battling for the top spot since early this year, and four contestants -- from Congress, Foreign & Domestic, and Sway -- are left.

The 86'd competition started internally between Uchi, Uchiko and Uchi Houston in 2008, and has now grown to include other restaurants to give aspiring chefs the chance to show their chops in the kitchen. (Sous chefs and other high-level restaurant staff aren't eligible to participate.)

3. Blue Monday Happy Hour

6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Free. Antone's, 2015 E. Riverside Dr. www.antonesnightclub.com.

If you're feeling like the blues, Antone's has a regular happy hour featuring Derek O'Brien, a blues guitarist and member of the house band. This week's is especially worth going to because it's O'Brien's birthday, and Antone's intends on celebrating. (Technically his birthday is on Wednesday, but you can wish him a happy birthday anyway.) Emily Gimble, who won an Austin Music Award earlier this year for best keyboardist, will be a special guest along with Georgia Bramhall.

There will also be free food from Milto's.
