Superman through the years:
-- January 1933: Superman's eventual creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, publish a short story titled "The Reign of the Superman." The "Superman" in the story is actually the bad guy.
-- June 1938: Superman makes his debut in Action Comics No. 1. The issue, with its iconic cover of Superman lifting a car and bashing it into a rock, is the Holy Grail of comic book collecting. In 2011, a copy of it in near-mint condition sold for $2.16 million.
-- Feb. 1940: Bud Collyer gives voice to the Man of Steel in the "The Adventures of Superman" radio serial.
-- September 1941: Superman makes his cinematic debut in a series of cartoons from Fleischer Studios.
-- 1948: Kirk Alyn plays the Man of Steel in a live action black-and-white serial.
-- September 1952: The Man of Steel appears on the small screen in "The Adventures of Superman," starring George Reeves. The show would air six seasons.
-- September 1966: "The New Adventures of Superman" cartoon series begins airing on CBS. Fellow DC Comics heroes Batman and Aquaman later join him on the show.
-- December 1978: The Last Son of Krypton gets a big-budget, big-screen treatment in "Superman," starring Christopher Reeve in the title role, Marlon Brando as Superman's father Jor-El and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor.
-- November 1992: Superman dies. The Death of Superman comic book issue sells a reported 4 million copies. However, the Man of Steel doesn't stay dead and is revived shortly thereafter.
-- September 1993: "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," starring Dean Cain as the Man of Steel and Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane, debuts on ABC. The show ran for four seasons.
-- September 1996: "Superman: The Animated Series" premieres on the WB, running for four seasons.
-- October 2001: Superman's upbringing is chronicled on the WB series "Smallville," starring Tom Welling as Clark Kent. The show ran for 10 seasons.
-- June 2006: Brandon Routh stars as the Man of Steel in "Superman Returns," the first new Superman movie in 19 years.
-- June 2013: "The Man of Steel," directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, opens.
