Media Advisory: Minister MacKay and the Royal Canadian Navy Celebrate the Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic

OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/03/13 -- Media are invited to attend the Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic Ceremony with The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, to commemorate the sacrifices made by those thousands of Canadians who fought so valiantly in the North Atlantic.

When: 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. ADT, May 5, 2013

Where: Halifax Memorial, Point Pleasant Park, Halifax, N.S.

Each year on the first Sunday in May, Canada's naval community commemorates those lost at sea in the longest single campaign of the Second World War. Today, the legacy of the Battle of the Atlantic is upheld by those currently serving, pledging themselves "Ready, Aye, Ready" to face today's security challenges with pride and professionalism.

Families, friends, VIPs, and personnel from Canadian Forces Base Halifax will be in attendance to pay their respects. As well, Her Majesty's Canadian Ship Sackville, the last remaining WWII Corvette, will be actively engaged by the laying of a wreath from a position just off of the memorial site.

The event officially begins at 10:10 a.m. at the Halifax Memorial with a parade marching from Black Rock Beach. Please note that parking is limited and that there is a 3-5 minute walk to the event's location.
