THOUSANDS of revellers are expected as Evolution, the biggest musical festival in the region, kicks off today.

It features another line-up of the most influential and exciting names in popular music. Top of the bill at the two-day event on Newcastle Quayside is Paloma Faith, the queen of retro soul and sassy pop.

Performing tracks from two highly acclaimed albums Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful and Fall To Grace, Paloma was nominated for Best Female Solo Artist and Best British Album at the Brit Awards.

Evolution is a snapshot of everything en vogue and continues to strive to bring the best artists to the North East.

Evolution Festival promoter Jim Mawdsley said: "We have been working damned hard over the last few months to put together the strongest, most varied line up yet!

"As usual we are proud to have such a strong mix of today's heavyweights and future stars. The dance stage at Ballast Hills will be an even bigger draw this year and again we are producing all of this for the best value ticket in the UK Festival market!" Other performers include Jake Bugg, Ellie Goulding, The Strypes, Rudimental and The Vaccines, and the festival follows yesterday's Evolution Emerging which featured a host of the region's up-and- coming acts.

Timings for each line-up will only be on the gate, in case of late changes.
