May 17--A weeklong celebration of Duluth-born and Hibbing-raised musician Bob Dylan begins tonight with a fundraising concert to benefit the Duluth Armory Arts & Music Center.
The 7 p.m. concert at Weber Music Hall on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth features Dylan collaborators Scarlet Rivera and Gene Lafond.
The annual Dylan Days includes events in Duluth and Hibbing that run through May 26.
A poetic performance and Dylan cover music are on tap in downtown Duluth today.
"Poets From the North Country" begins at 3 p.m. at the Zeitgeist Arts Atrium, 222 E. Superior St. It will feature Northland poet Sheila Packa as host while writers offer readings on Dylan's influence on their writing.
At 10 p.m. down the block at Tycoons Alehouse, Marc Gartman will lead other musicians in Dylan songs. On the lineup are Tim Saxhaug and Dave Carroll from Trampled by Turtles, Sara Krueger and the band Diet Folk.
There are events through next Sunday in Duluth and Hibbing. Here is the rundown:
--Sunday: 8 p.m., Dylan trivia at Carmody Irish Pub, 308 E. Superior St., Duluth.
--Monday: 8 p.m., open mic night for Dylan songs, Beaner's Central, 324 N. Central Ave., Duluth.
--Tuesday: 8 p.m., Dylan movie and music night, Redstar Lounge, Duluth. Hosted by John Bushey with music by Snobarn.
--Wednesday: 7 p.m., Dylan's 72nd birthday bash, Red Star Lounge, 600 E. Superior St.
--Thursday: 5:30 p.m., Blood on the Tracks music train ride from Fitger's courtyard in Duluth to Two Harbors.
--Friday: 1 p.m., creative writing workshop and Dylan-inspired literary showcase and music, Hibbing Memorial Building; 7 p.m., singer-songwriter contest, Zimmy's, Hibbing.
--Saturday, May 25: 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Dylan Days bus tour departing from Zimmy's; 2:30 p.m., book signing at Howard Street Booksellers with poet and professor M.L. Liebler signing his book "Working Words: Punching the Clock and Kicking Out the Jams"; 2-5 p.m., postal cancellations at Zimmy's with local artists' demonstrations; 5-7 p.m. Dylan Days singer-songwriter contest; 7 p.m. music at Zimmy's featuring Mark Rubin, The Adjustments.
--Sunday, May 26: 10 a.m. to noon, brunch at Zimmy's with final judging of the art contest and open-mic music.
Most events are free with purchase of a $5 souvenir Dylan Days button, available at the venues. The train and bus tours are $25 and $30.
