Who's playing Alive After Five this season?

May 16--Music returns to the streets of Uptown Shelby next week.

Alive After Five kicks off its season May 23.

Here's who you can hear at the first concert and throughout the coming months:

May 23 -- The Overmountain Men

The band blends Americana, super-band talent and a local connection. The band's name commemorates the patriots who came from the mountains to the north to fight at Kings Mountain.

June 6 -- Dirty Grass Soul

The band plays bluegrass-flavored versions of alternative country.

June 20 -- Big Daddy Love

The band offers a tuneful take on Appalachian rock.

July 4, 18 -- Acoustic music, street-corner activities with support from Art Blooms Do It Yourself studio and musicians around the court square and Lafayette Street

Aug. 1 -- Harvest

The jam-band-style group plays deeply rooted Americana music.

Aug. 15 -- The Ocean Boulevard Band

Classic beach music and shagging tunes.

Sept. 5 -- Tater Family Travelling Circus

The band offers Hillbilly rock.

Sponsors for the shows include Fox Distributing, Shelby Shopper and Info, Shelby Savings Bank, Star Stage and Sound, Keeter Ford-Lincoln-Rousch, Griffin Brothers Tire, PSU Personnel Services Unlimited, The Star, the city of Shelby , Wesson Septic Tank Service and wgwg.org.

Shelby Savings will sponsor the Kid Zone, with games and activities for children. Fox Distributing will return the Craft Beer Spotlight for adults.

Summer movies series

The Summer Cinema series at the Don Gibson Theatre begins June 12, with films to follow on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month.

Doors open each show night at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is $1, and popcorn is free.

Movies will start at 7 p.m. and will be finished by 9 p.m.
