Theater Review: This 'Blonde' Just Wants to Have Fun

May 16, 2013

May 16--If you're looking for a few hours away from the "real world" and a little laugh-out-loud humor, you'll find that in Riverside Dinner Theater's production of "Legally Blonde: The Musical."

The show is about bright and bubbly Elle Woods, the president of the Delta Nu sorority at University of California Los Angeles, and her quest to get her ex-boyfriend back and a rock on her right hand. Elle follows him to Harvard Law to prove that she's serious enough for him and his upper-echelon family.

But when she gets there, with the encouragement of a few friends, Elle surprises herself and succeeds as a law student.

Julie Baird sparkles as Elle Woods, with her lovely voice and onstage charisma. She easily wins the audience over with her portrayal of the character originally played by Reese Witherspoon in the movie of the same name.

Emily Blair Powers brings humor to the show with her hilarious portrayal of Elle's manicurist and friend, Paulette. The musical gives Paulette a more developed backstory than the movie does and introduces the audience to her fascination with Ireland, which leads to a few giggle-worthy scenes.

Another standout star was Analisa Wall, who plays Vivienne Elle's enemy through most of the show. The Stafford High School senior seems much older than her years, especially in the scenes where she gets to sing. Riverside would be smart to keep her around and nurture that talent.

The "Legally Blonde" cast members work well together, and their chemistry will only continue to blossom. The scenery is well-done in that it tells the audience where they are without being a distraction from the actors.

One of the funniest scenes in the show is a number titled "Gay or European" which takes place in a courtroom. It is one of the most pivotal parts of the story one that fans of the movie will remember and has been expanded for the stage.

See the show while you can. It's a gem and one that Fredericksburg audiences will enjoy.
