AN AWARD-WINNING composer of musicals and Cornwall's acclaimed Playrite Theatre Company have joined forces for a new show which is set to wow them in the aisles this month.

Viv Hendra, who runs Lander Gallery in Truro and was formerly a music teacher at Torpoint School, will see his show Piper staged by Playrite at the Burrell Theatre, Truro School, from Monday, May 27, to Friday, May 31.

Not quite the Pied Piper of Hamlyn, this curious tale is set in a French village in the 1700s where all is not well ... corrupt officials stealing, parents who don't care, a boy who never tells the truth. And then come the rats.

Viv told What's On: The show is bright, colourful and lively ... but with darker shadows. The young cast are amazing and I hope you will find yourself singing the songs afterwards. In 1990 the Theatre Royal, Plymouth, launched its New Musical Voices competition and Viv's show Dear Georgette was one of the winning entries and was produced in the Drum Theatre. It was well received including a glowing review in The Guardian. The following year Viv won again with Rendezvous. A burgeoning career as a musical theatre composer was cut short when Viv opened the Lander Gallery in Lemon Street, Truro. A huge success over the past ten years, the business usurped music in Viv's life ... until now.

He first came to Trevor Hitchings' Playrite Theatre Company as a fan, in fact writing reviews for this very paper. Sitting in the audience I suddenly realised I wanted to have them stage one of my shows, he added. I had written a panto while I was teaching called The Pied Piper Of Old Torpoint and I always wanted to revisit it and turn it into a proper stage musical. So I persuaded Trevor Hitchings to give me a proper audition and he agreed to direct it. With musical direction by Aaron Barker and imaginative sets by Mike Meer, Piper is all set to make its impressive debut ... don't miss it. Performances take place at 7.30pm on May 27 to 31.

Tickets are Pounds 9 for adults and Pounds 6.50 for children under 12 from the Lander Gallery and 07872 449168.
