May 13--A documentary about the controversial Russian punk band Pussy Riot, Bobcat Goldthwait's new film as well as an appearance by the comedian turned filmmaker, and a 35mm screening of Robert Altman's '70s-era classic McCabe and Mrs. Miller are three of the highlights of the second Oak Cliff Film Festival set for June 6-9 at the Texas Theatre and other venues in the area.
The Pussy Riot film, Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer, is one of two opening night films. The other, Drinking Buddies, is very different. It's a romantic comedy from director Joe Swanberg starring Anna Kendrick and Jake Johnson. DJ Wild in the Streets will be providing music for the night.
The Goldthwait film, Willow Creek, a found-footage film about Bigfoot (yes, really), screens 8:30 p.m. June 9. The man himself (Goldthwait, not Bigfoot) will be there to talk about it. McCabe and Mrs. Miller, a Western starring Julie Christie and Warren Beatty, screens 7 p.m. June 7.
More than 70 features and shorts are due to shown during the four-day film feast.
The unique aspect of the Oak Cliff film fest are the extracurricular activities beyond film screenings. This year, that includes a treasure hunt by bicycle through Oak Cliff, ending with a cocktail party at the Belmont Hotel. Other venues participating include the Oil and Cotton art studio, the Bishop Arts Theatre, The Kessler Theatre, Four Corners Brewery, and the Turner House.
