IMAGE de Northern Utah will honor educators from Weber State
University and Ogden Weber Applied Technology College during its "Legacy, an
Honorary Tribute" event.
With the event, IMAGE de Northern Utah says it recognizes individuals who have
been longtime champions of the educational pursuits of Latinos in the community
at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Zucca Trattoria Restaurant, 1479 E. 5600 South, South
Ogden.
Honorees will be retired WSU President F. Ann Millner; retired OWATC President
C. Brent Wallis; current OWATC President Collette Mercier; WSU Assist to the
President for Diversity and Professor of Education Forrest Crawford; WSU
director affirmative action/equal Opportunity Barry Gomberg; and retired OWATC
director of diversity Pamela Candia-Hernandez.
"The individuals that we're honoring have been very supportive of IMAGE for
many, many years," as well as of Latinos on their campuses, IMAGE de Northern
Utah Chairwoman AnnaJane Arroyo said.
During the event, IMAGE de Northern Utah will introduce newly appointed WSU
President Charles A. Wight and the university's new Assistant for Diversity.
Organizers say the honorees have collaborated with IMAGE de Northern Utah and
many other local and statewide Latino organizations in efforts to help the
community advance in the areas of education and employment.
Proceeds from the evening will go toward IMAGE de Northern Utah's scholarship
fund, which helps enrolled college students facing a financial crisis to
continue their education without interruption.
"What we found in the past is, it becomes very difficult to access the money if
a student is in crisis," Arroyo said, "but with this one, its a discretionary
fund. It doesn't exceed a certain amount of money."
By providing a discretionary fund, students will not have to choose between
things, such as replacing a blown-out tire on their cars or buying books for the
semester.
"It is not a substantial scholarship," Arroyo said, "but it is a significant
scholarship."
The event is $50 a person and includes dinner. The price to co-sponsor the event
is $1,000. Seating is limited to 80, so advance registration is necessary.
Donations to the scholarship will be accepted in care of IMAGE de Northern Utah
at PO BOX 1053 Clearfield UT 84015.
