ST. LOUIS, MO -- (Marketwired) -- 04/09/13 -- Ever wonder if you should be worried about antibiotics in meat or exactly what is a genetically modified (GMO) food? Now you can find answers to all of your food and farming questions from the real people raising it -- America's farm families.
As food conversations have evolved from the dinner table to mainstream media, Americans have a greater interest in understanding where their food comes from. In fact, a recent survey found that more than 70 percent of moms admitted to having questions or concerns about how their food is grown or raised.
In response to this new demand for food information, volunteer farm women from 16 states have joined together to form the CommonGround program. The goal of the program is to be a resource to provide moms with facts and information that can help them make informed food choices. The farmer-volunteers want individuals to feel empowered to make food choices based on facts and not fear.
"I want consumers to know that every farmer I know is doing what he or she can to raise the best, healthiest food possible," says CommonGround volunteer Renee Fordyce from Bethany, Mo. "Our families all eat the same food, so as a mother it is vitally important to me to provide safe, healthy food for all consumers. I want to help others trust their food supply and understand that farming is where integrity meets quality."
One of the main activities of CommonGround includes volunteer farmers engaging in face-to-face conversations with moms to share the facts on where food comes from. Through this conversation, CommonGround hopes to dispel misconceptions and educate consumers about America's modern food system. The conversation also continues online through social media outlets and the CommonGround website, which addresses the eight food topics most questioned by consumers.

CommonGround is a grass-roots movement to foster conversation among women -- on farms and in cities -- about where our food comes from. The United Soybean Board (USB) and the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) developed CommonGround to give farm women the opportunity to engage with consumers through the use of a wide range of activities. USB and NCGA provide support and a platform for the volunteers to tell their stories.
