LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwired) -- 04/24/13 -- Interest in sailing exploded in 2012 after holidaymakers were inspired by the summer achievements of Britain's best sports stars. The trend shows no sign of slowing down with a recent survey showing that 75 per cent of people want to keep active on holiday, and thrills and spills on the water is the perfect way to go about it.

Getting to grips with sailing

Neilson offers three accredited RYA courses to suit different ages and abilities. There's the RYA Competent Crew course for beginners, the RYA Day Skipper course for aspiring skippers who already have some experience, and a combination of the two for those who want a fast-track route to solid sailing skills.

RYA Competent Crew

This is an introductory course for those want to experience life on a yacht. No previous experience or knowledge is required. It's a perfect chance to learn the basics of sailing under the bright sunshine and clear blue skies of the Med.

It's a live-on, hands-on course that lasts for five days. By the end of the on-board training, budding sailors will be able to steer, handle the anchor, use the sails and ropes, moor up and understand the basic skills of navigation.

The course costs GBP 695 in addition to the price of a Neilson flotilla holiday.

RYA Day Skipper

This course requires some previous experience of yachting and is geared toward those who'd like to take charge of a yacht. An element of theory is required for this course but the contents can be found in a handy online training system. Having a read through before travel is recommended!

Completing this course will give aspiring skippers the confidence to navigate, pilot the yacht, handle under power, sail and emergency situations, plan night cruising and understand yacht maintenance.

The Day Skipper course can even be completed on a private flotilla yacht with an experienced instructor who's on hand for 5 days. They will disembark after the training period and leave the yacht in the trainee's newly capable hands for a night and a day.

RYA Competent Crew and Day Skipper Combined

This is the no-nonsense route for those who want to go from greenhorn to skipper in a matter of two weeks. Applicants must learn the theory elements before embarkation. There is a short break between the courses so trainees can take stock of what they've learnt.

All of the above courses can only be booked via the Neilson specialist sales team on 0844 879 8155 - call to find out more.

Along with all the normal benefits of joining the RYA, like free expert boating advice and a say in sailing legislation, members also enjoy a 10% discount on sailing holidays from Neilson.
