ORADELL, NJ -- (Marketwired) -- 04/22/13 -- Key executives from the Huntington Learning Center recently attended the 13th annual Education Industry Days Summit in Washington, D.C., participating in discussions about the Common Core State Standards, tightening state and school district budgets, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) waivers and how waivers impact education reform, and more. Huntington also provided sponsorship of the event, hosted by the Education Industry Association (EIA), which represents more than 300 preK-12 education organizations that serve families, communities and schools.
The supplemental education services market has changed dramatically in recent years, with more than 30 states now receiving waivers from provisions of NCLB that previously required them to offer tutoring services (paid for by NCLB Title I funds) to students at underperforming schools. Still, school districts must reform their schools and be accountable for their results.
"Our Huntington School Services business has certainly been impacted by these changes, but we remain focused on what matters most: helping schools and children who need it," said Taryn Weitzman, senior director, Huntington Center Services and Huntington School Services, franchise operations. "We are hard at work finding other ways to provide our premier tutoring services to struggling schools and high-need students, whether through private grants, other sources of federal funding, collaboration with nonprofits or other possibilities."
In the 11 years that Huntington has provided supplemental education services under NCLB, the company has provided free tutoring to thousands of students across the country. The program has been a clear success overall, with students' scores increasing by an average of nearly 1 grade equivalent in reading and nearly 1.5 equivalent in math.
Weitzman added that the Education Industry Days Summit came at a good time. "The landscape has changed, but like our colleagues and peers in the EIA, we know that there is still opportunity for a private organization like ours to work well with our nation's schools and we still partner with dozens of districts across the U.S.," said Weitzman. "We will continue to build relationships with schools in the communities we serve and explore every possible avenue to ensure we can provide instruction to students who need it. We're very proud of the work we have done in the last decade and look forward to continuing to have a positive impact on our nation's neediest schools."
