SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/08/13 -- There is a boom in Australia's casino industry, according to a new list of top tourist attractions revealed in the Sydney Morning Herald.(1) The list puts three casinos at the top of the list - ahead of iconic attractions such as the Sydney Opera House. Internet poker specialist Online Casino Australia is experiencing a similar upward surge in popularity, and says the nation's favourite habit is rubbing off on tourists, both real and virtual.
Based on figures from independent research marketers Euromonitor, the report states that Crown Casino received 10.9 million visitors to its Melbourne 'integrated resort' during 2010, topping the list of tourist attractions for that year. Crown also have a complex in Perth, and have plans to open a casino in Sydney.
Second on the list is Jupiter's casino on the Gold Coast, with 10.6 million visitors. The third most visited attraction was the Star casino in Sydney, with 9 million visitors. The city's famous Opera House managed only 7.4 million visitors during 2010.
To contextualize the figures, Euromonitor compared figures with other world attractions. According to their report, the world's most visited tourist attraction is the Great Wall of China, which received 19.8 million sightseers in 2010. Disneyland in California receives some 15 million tourists annually.(2) Stonehenge, one of Britain's most popular sites, gets just over a million tourists per year.(3)
But Euromonitor also accepted the problems inherent in trying to ascertain precise figures. A spokesperson said, 'measuring visitor numbers to casinos is notoriously difficult.' The numbers for Crown's venues in Melbourne and Perth are also bulked out by tourists coming for the wealth of other attractions offered at both complexes. In Melbourne, Crown's resort boasts multiple hotels, function rooms, restaurants, shops and entertainment facilities alongside their huge casino, which features 2,500 gaming machines and a license for 500 table games. The Crown Perth resort has two hotels, award winning restaurants and a convention centre. Its casino operates 220 table games and 2,000 gaming machines.(4)
