The 49ers remain busy reshaping their roster for an NFC-title
defense. Trades, acquisitions, departures and 14 upcoming draft picks are all
part of this ongoing, laboring process.
It's understandable that the 49ers might audition an unemployed quarterback, that being former West Virginia star Pat White, as reported Sunday by USA Today. The 49ers have only two quarterbacks on their roster, and there's no harm in trying out White as a read-option quarterback.
Then again, White hasn't played in the NFL since flaming out as a 2009 rookie with the Miami Dolphins, who drafted him in the second round and saw him complete 0-of-5 while running 21 times for 81 yards. From a 2011 stint in the now-defunct
United Football League to a March 14 workout at West Virginia's pro day, White is game for a comeback.
The 49ers are a potential dance partner because, (a) their offense is driven by mobile quarterback Colin Kaepernick, (b) they could use someone else beside Scott Tolzien on the depth chart, (c) coach Jim Harbaugh is a quarterback whisperer, and, (d) they give comebacks to those who've been on a hiatus (see: Moss, Randy).
Only a couple vacancies remain on the 49ers' roster aside from backup quarterback. Depth is needed on the offensive line, defensive line and in the secondary (paging: Nnamdi Asomugha) to challenge incumbents. General manager Trent Baalke also needs to replace Ted Ginn on returns, and an extra tight end is a must to offset Delanie Walker's departure.
Here is an early guess at the 49ers' depth chart, with probable starters in capital letters:
