YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES -- (Marketwire) -- 03/25/13 -- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council today announced funding for a study on impacts and opportunities that arise due to the effects of changing permafrost conditions on public infrastructure in the Northwest Territories.

"The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of a sustainable and diverse economy," said Minister Aglukkaq. "This study will help communities prepare for the impacts of changing permafrost on public infrastructure and the potential technical and economic opportunities associated with those changes."

CanNor's investment of $176,000 will help the Northwest Territories Association of Communities complete a study of the impacts of melting permafrost on public infrastructure in the NWT. This study will develop an infrastructure database for the Northwest Territories, complete geotechnical reviews of public infrastructure across the territory, demonstrate the economic impacts and vulnerabilities to various levels of government, and compare proactive versus reactive approaches. The study results will be published in Summer 2013.

Mayor Merven Gruben, President of the NWT Association of Communities stated "We are very pleased to be able to articulate the impacts of the changing permafrost on public infrastructure along with the many opportunities that go along with it. It will allow the Association to address a number of its resolutions around climate change. Although the project requires the cooperation of all levels of government, this work would not be possible without the support of CanNor's funding."

"Our Government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security," concluded Minister Aglukkaq.

Investment in this project is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity-building across the North.

SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North through its contribution programs, and for related policy development and research.
