EL PASO, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 03/25/13 -- Michael Gopin, founder of the Law Offices of Michael J. Gopin and a noted legal professional, responds to efforts to repeal motorcycle helmet laws in North Carolina with a statement to the press. He encourages motorcyclists to uphold safety laws and recommendations when riding in an effort to best safeguard themselves against injury.

According to an article posted by NewsObserver.com, individuals in the state of North Carolina are protesting the legal requirement to wear a helmet when operating a motorcycle. The article explains that there are 19 states, total, that have made it mandatory for motorcyclists to wear a helmet when on the road. This legislation is targeted at improving the outcomes of accidents and reducing the risk of head injury. The article asserts: "Studies credit helmets with reducing deaths and serious brain injury in crashes, and a recent survey by the Governor's Highway Safety Program found that 78 percent of motorcycle riders support the state law."

Despite the fact that the vast majority of motorcyclists are in favor of mandatory helmet use, there are some who are lobbying to repeal or weaken this law. Opponents of helmet laws cite personal freedom in their favor, but Gopin encourages helmet use whether it is legally required or not.

"The fact of the matter is that, no matter what the law requires, a helmet is an important piece of safety equipment for motorcyclists," states Michael Gopin. "As an attorney who represents clients who have been involved in accidents on motorcycles, I can say in all sincerity that it is in the best interest of riders to wear a helmet."

In addition to properly protecting their heads, Gopin encourages motorcyclists to also follow other safety best practices, such as maintaining the speed limit, practicing defensive driving techniques without becoming aggressive, adjusting riding style to changing environments and avoiding the temptation to weave in and out of traffic.

"Motorcycle accidents cannot all be avoided," Gopin states, "but many can be prevented with safe riding techniques and the adherence to safety practices. Wearing a helmet is just one of the ways in which motorcyclists can protect themselves when on the road."
