OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/21/13 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today issued the following statement on the occasion of the first International Day of Forests, as declared by the United Nations General Assembly.
"Natural Resources Canada is pleased to support the inaugural International Day of Forests. Canadians can be proud of our reputation as an international leader in sustainable forest management. Our practices in managing Canada's forests are continuously improving so that this renewable resource will be healthy for future generations.
"Canada's expertise in sustainable forest management is founded on world-class science. We continually share our knowledge and expertise so that forest managers around the world can benefit from our approach of balancing the wide range of benefits derived from this valuable natural resource.
"Canada is also demonstrating to the world that sustainable forest management and forest sector innovation go hand in hand.
"Global demand for forest products is on the rise, and, increasingly, consumers are asking for wood products from sustainably managed forests. Canada is well positioned to meet this demand. Approximately 150 million hectares of Canada's forests are certified by third parties as being sustainably managed - far more than for any other country in the world.
"Today, Canada's wood products sector is growing and hiring, often in rural communities. This represents a tremendous opportunity for young Canadians - Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal - to work in an industry that is globally recognized as innovative and responsible.
"I commend the United Nations for declaring International Day of Forests, as it gives Canadians an opportunity to reflect on the important role forests and trees play in our history and in our social, environmental and economic well-being, together with the role that they will continue to play for future generations."
