ST. LOUIS, MO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/19/13 -- Although everyone has a connection to food, not everyone gets a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how food makes it from the farm to our plates. In fact, a recent survey found that more than 70 percent of moms admitted to having questions or concerns about how their food is grown or raised.
More Americans growing up in urban and suburban areas, miles from farm life, are lacking first-hand knowledge about modern agriculture and our food system. This disconnect can foster concern and confusion, and it can often propel food myths. The CommonGround program, created by volunteer farm women from 16 states, serves as a resource to provide moms with facts and information that can help them make educated choices about the food they buy for their families.
"So many times I would hear all these conversations going on when I lived in an urban area, and I would have to address the misconceptions that they had. I think that CommonGround is a great opportunity for me to share some of the things about my family, about our farming operations and also the American food supply," says CommonGround volunteer Carrie Divine from Morganfield, Kentucky.
American agriculture touches us all. Celebrate National Agriculture Day on March 19 and learn about America's remarkable food system and the people behind it. CommonGround advocates are volunteers who are passionate about agriculture and setting the record straight about farming and food. The volunteers interact with consumers through in-person conversations and online, and they showcase the common ground between real farm families and consumers who benefit from all that farmers produce. America's farmers produce food that is safe, affordable, accessible and nutritious.

CommonGround is a grass-roots movement to foster conversation among women -- on farms and in cities -- about where our food comes from. The United Soybean Board (USB) and the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) developed CommonGround to give farm women the opportunity to engage with consumers through the use of a wide range of activities. USB and NCGA provide support and a platform for the volunteers to tell their stories.
