MAPLE RIDGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/13/13 -- Today, Randy Kamp, Member of Parliament for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the District of Maple Ridge's Hammond Stadium under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"Our Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities across Canada," said MP Kamp. "By making these investments in local infrastructure, we are helping boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for Canadians."

The Harper Government's investment of $187,500 will be used to upgrade the Hammond Stadium playing field. The improvements will include renovating the turf grass areas and installing new dugouts and permanent outfield fencing. The field will also be re-oriented to a northwest configuration to minimize the impact of direct sunlight on players.

"Long-time residents know that the Hammond Stadium was the hub of social life in this historic neighbourhood. The owners of Hammond Mill would recruit employees from around the continent to ensure that they fielded a competitive baseball team. In 1924 the Hammond Mill team were the BC Provincial Champions. Here we are 90 years after that championship honouring the legacy of those players and this wonderful neighbourhood," said Mayor Ernie Daykin. "Maple Ridge will be adding $325,000 to this funding from the Government of Canada to create a facility that will ensure that the next generation of youth in Maple Ridge have a chance to follow their baseball dreams."

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
