CAMPBELL RIVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/12/13 -- Today, the Honourable John Duncan, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Tyee Club of British Columbia under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"Our Government is continuing to support communities across Canada by investing in important local infrastructure," said MP Duncan. "Today's announcement is another example of how the federal government is committed to supporting growth and community spirit while creating jobs and long-term prosperity in Campbell River."
The Harper Government's investment of $40,300 will enhance the services provided by the Tyee Club of British Columbia. With the funding provided, the club will upgrade the row boat dock to ensure compliance with environmental standards. Improvements to the dock include building new pull ups for boats, removing outdated wharves, and upgrading the system that secures floats to pilings.
"Since 1924, when the Tyee Club was formed, anglers from around the world have come to the waters at the mouth of the Campbell River to fish for Chinook salmon under rules and regulations designed to promote quality over quantity" said Sharon Fisher, President of the Tyee Club of British Columbia. "In almost 90 years, we have overcome many challenges and today, overcoming our most recent challenge, a home for the unique, historical rowboats that are essential to the sustainability of this significant, economic resource, has been assured, thanks to funding from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
