EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/08/13 -- Recent news stories have highlighted requests by Canadian women for Provincial Ministries of Health to fund out-of-country treatment for complications related to trans-vaginally placed surgical mesh. The Western Society of Pelvic Medicine (WSPM) is a national professional organization of specialists in Female Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery. Members of the society have all pursued postgraduate training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to female pelvic floor dysfunction, including pelvic organ prolapse, and urinary and fecal incontinence.
The WSPM is sympathetic to the women who are suffering from complications related to trans-vaginally placed surgical mesh, and many of our members are actively involved in treating these women. Our membership is also engaged in research to define the most successful techniques to diagnose and treat these problems, and we base our treatment decisions on the best medical evidence.
Unfortunately, there is considerable publically available misinformation regarding how to diagnose and treat these problems. This misinformation includes the erroneous lack of Canadian providers who are qualified and experienced in treating mesh related complications. The WSPM wants to correct this misperception and towards that end provides the following list of centres of excellence through out Canada that are capable of treating complications related to trans-vaginally placed mesh. We encourage family physicians caring for these patients to refer them to these sites.
