ATLANTA, GA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/20/13 -- In an expansion of its nationally recognized environmental litigation practice, King & Spalding has recruited Adam G. Sowatzka as a partner in its Atlanta office. Sowatzka, a specialist in environmental regulation and a former federal regulator, rejoins King & Spalding from Baker Donelson, where he was a shareholder. He was at King & Spalding from 2007 to 2010.
"Adam is an outstanding environmental lawyer, and we are pleased to welcome him back to the firm," said Carol M. Wood, leader of King & Spalding's tort and environmental practice. "His prior work at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, coupled with his extensive experience in water and waste issues, will help us further expand our environmental practice. We expect Adam to play a leading role in broadening the reach of this practice throughout the United States."
Sowatzka advises clients on environmental risks and liabilities associated with regulatory compliance, corporate transactions and sustainable development. He also assists clients in the defense of administrative, civil and criminal proceedings involving permitting and environmental enforcement matters at the federal and state level, especially issues related to wastewater and storm water. Previously, he was an associate regional counsel at the EPA and served as chair of the environmental law section of the Georgia State Bar. Sowatzka received J.D. and Master Studies in Environmental Law degrees from Vermont Law School and a B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Sowatzka said: "I am delighted to return to King & Spalding and once again be part of our talented environmental litigation team. The opportunity to develop my practice from King & Spalding's extraordinary platform and to lend a hand to the expansion of the practice made this the right move for me."
King & Spalding's environmental lawyers assist clients with nearly every type of environmental issue -- regulatory advice, permit appeals, enforcement defense, cost recovery claims and trials over alleged environmental contamination. The firm's environmental practice includes lawyers with technical backgrounds in engineering, chemistry, biology, land use and environmental policy. The firm was named a 2012 environmental practice group of the year by Law360.
