Detour Gold in focus Equities in Toronto were up on Tuesday in a session that promises to be quiet, with many investors out already for the Christmas holiday break. The S&P/TSX composite index tacked on 38.10 points to open an abbreviated Christmas Eve session at 13,485.80 The Canadian dollar settled 0.15 cents to 94.10 cents U.S. The Toronto exchange will close at 1 p.m. ET and will stay closed on Wednesday and Thursday for the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays. CIBC cut the price target on Detour Gold to $10.50 from $12 following the frequent shutdown of its mill due to mechanical issues that may affect its firs-quarter production. Detour shares acquired a dime each to $3.70 ON BAYSTREET The TSX Venture Exchange gained 1.97 points to 898.85 All but two of the 14 TSX subgroups were higher, with gold up 1.3%, global base metals surging 1%, and metals and mining hiking 0.9%. The two laggards were utilities, down 0.06%, and health-care, off 0.03%. ON WALLSTREET Investors and traders prepared for the upcoming Christmas break and a shortened trading session. The Dow gained 30.92 points to begin Tuesday at 16,325.53 The S&P 500 index improved 3.07 points to 1,831.06. The NASDAQ acquired 4.50 points to 4,153.40. But the gains were still enough to push the Dow and S&P 500 to fresh all-time highs, and the NASDAQ to a new 13-year high. Stock markets in New York will close at 1 p.m. ET Tuesday , and markets will remain closed Wednesday for Christmas Day . While Tuesday is expected to be a tame trading day, markets have certainly made big moves so far this year, with the Dow Jones industrial average and S&P 500 both up more than 20%, while the NASDAQ jumped more than 30%. Prices for 10-year U.S. Treasuries dipped, hiking yields to 2.96% from Monday's 2.93%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions. Oil prices added 26 cents to $99.17 U.S. a barrel. Gold prices took on $3.80 to $1,200.80 U.S. an ounce.
