Munazamat Al Dawa Al Islamia, an international charitable organization recently donated US$5000 and 15 computers to President Yahya Jammeh Islamic University at a presentation ceremony held at the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council along MDI Road.
The organization which is serving the West African sub-region including the Gambia where it has its headquarters, in the areas of health, education, and humanitarian services both at community and individual levels is determined to complement government's efforts towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
The donated items were received by Dr Al Amine Yerro Fanna, the director of finance and administrator at the President Yahya Jammeh Islamic University. In an interview with Daily Observer, Dr Baba Sankung Ceesay, the vice chancellor of President Yahya Jammeh Islamic University, commended the donors for what he called a timely intervention. According to him, the university is preparing to set up a computer lab for the students, and that the donated computers will ease some of their constraints.
Dr Ceesay explained that one hundred and thirty five students are currently enrolled at the university who will use the computers. He thanked the government of the Gambia for creating the enabling environment for such organizations to operate and help the Islamic Ummah. According to him, the university will provide education for Gambian students and the entire West African sub-region.
Bambo Sillah, the administrative secretary of the President Yahya Jammeh Islamic University, said the donated computers will help students acquire basic computer skills. He further stated that the university is not only for Islamic and Sharia education but will expand to cover Information Technology, humanity and other fields. Sillah thanked the Gambian leader for his personal support to the university and his propagation of Islamic in the Gambia. This, he said, is the reason why the university is named after him for generations to come to see what he has been doing for Muslims in the Gambia and the entire Islamic ummah. Author: Omar Wally
