Acer enters the budget tablet space with Iconia A1-810 and it resembles an iPad Mini but the Taiwanese vendor is going to face stiff competition as the low-cost tablet market is very brutal.
Most of the tablets in the market have a 16:9 screen format but Acer is copying Apple's 4:3 screen format.
The 7.9-inch device is powered by
Acer has used the
The IPS screen's resolution is not Full HD but the 1,024x768 resolution display produces fairly vibrant colours with details and brightness is good in indoors.
Acer has added a good selection of ports like micro HDMI and micro USB.
The tablet is fairly thick and bulky and the bezels are thick too.
The touch WakeApp is a convenient app for the user to easily wake up a tablet mode in sleep mode with five-finger or two-thumb gestures. Users can wake up the tablet using the five fingers placing on the screen or by holding the tablet in the portrait mode and placing both the thumbs on the edges of the screen for skipping the lock screen.
The disadvantage of the two thumb policy is that it works only in portrait mode and always opens the camera app. Users should be able to customize their app choice. The five-finger gesture takes you to the home screen.
The single speaker on the back offers basic audio without any bass and treble and volume is not high either. But pairing with a headphone produces decent audio.
The 5MP rear camera is only capable of taking basic shots with no LED flash and auto focus. In bright light, the device shoots decent snaps with colours and details but not great. In low-light conditions it is a failure.
The 0.3MP front-facing camera is good only for video chat. Panoramic shots must be done done very slowly as rendering takes about 20 seconds.
The video playback is smooth but watching full HD videos won't blow you away due to the low resolution screen. But it does not support AVI, MOV or MKI files just MPEG4 format. Video is recorded in 720p resolution at 30 frames per second.
Acer has pre-installed apps like
Playing 2D and 3D games are okay but the graphics chip suffers when playing graphic-rich games like
Regarding connectivity, it has Bluetooth 4.0, WiFI and no options for 3G or NFC. The advantage of A1 is the inclusion of GPS.
The 4960mAh battery gives more than seven-and-a-half hours of video which is pretty decent. The device is good for browsing and reading but not for productivity purposes. It is priced at Dh799.
