Nov. 04--Pleasant Valley School District officials hope to recruit new substitutes in a variety of positions, and employ some local residents in the process.
The district will hold a substitute fair from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the high school gym.
"This is an opportunity to be interviewed that night, rather than waiting for an actual vacancy. It will expedite the process," said Christopher Fisher, assistant to the superintendent.
In addition to substitute teachers, the district is seeking nurses, secretaries, custodians, teachers' aides and security staff.
District officials say the event is also a way to provide local residents with jobs, but applicants are not required to live within the school district.
"With the current job market, we can fill the need of people looking for employment, and we have some substitute openings," Fisher said. "It's a two-way street."
Serving as a substitute could also lead to more permanent employment. The district often looks to its substitutes when full-time positions become available, Fisher said.
"When an opening does arise, you have someone with on-the-job experience. It tells you more than a job interview can. It's like an on-the-job interview," he said.
Wages vary based on the contracts of the different positions.
On Wednesday, administrators from all district departments will be on hand to interview applicants and help them through the online application system.
The positions are available to the public, but applicants for nursing and teaching positions must have current certifications in their respective fields.
"For many of these positions, we're just looking for people who like to work," Fisher said.
