The 45-year-old actor revealed to his 231,000 Instagram followers that he suffered a skin cancer scare on his face.
"(Wife Deborra-Lee Furness) said to get the mark on my nose checked," he posted Nov. 21 with a picture of his bandaged nose.
"Boy, was she right! I had a basil cell carcinoma. Please don't be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!"
Though Hugh's rep didn't divulge more details, the diagnosis came in the last few days. A photo of the star taken backstage at the Broadway production of "Big Fish" Nov. 13 clearly shows a small blemish on the bridge of his nose.
Basal cell carcinoma is a common form of skin cancer, often manifested as a waxy bump or sore and attributed to long-term exposure to radiation from the sun, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Though it rarely spreads, if left untreated, basal cell carcinoma can cause disfigurement.
The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that there are 2.8 million cases of BCC diagnosed in the United States every year.
Hugh told the Daily News in July that he was taking the rest of the year off from show business to spend time with his family in New York City after filming four movies -- "Les Miserables," "The Wolverine," "Prisoners" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" -- in a row.
-- New York Daily News,Trent finds time for ailing fan
Even in the middle of a concert, Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor isn't too buzy to reach out and touch someone.
Digital Spy reports that the singer, a Sharon native, FaceTimed with Andrew Youssef, a concert photographer and cancer-stricken fan, in the middle of the band's Nov. 16 set in Las Vegas.
The website says Andrew was told by doctors in September that he may only have several months to live, and he was too ill to attend the gig.
Shortly before the band's encore, Trent took out his iPhone and called Andrew, dedicating the track "In the Twilight" to Andrew, who was watching from the hospital.
Andrew later tweeted: "I'm speechless. Hope to see you @trent_reznor @nineinchnails soon."
It's not the first time Trent's got in touch. Digital Spy says the singer's had messages for Andrew on Twitter over the past year, including one earlier on the day of the concert.

John says in the note that doctors found the cancer early and "see no reason why I won't fully recover." The cancer is not related to the squamous cell cancer on his neck for which he was treated in the mid-1990s. John's management confirmed the details of the post.
The "Angel from Montgomery" singer postponed dates in Wisconsin earlier this month because of illness. Those concerts and two scheduled for next month in Louisville will be pushed to 2014. John will still perform Dec. 6 and 7 in North Carolina.
