NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 11/19/13 -- Halfway through its run, Hal Hartley's NED RIFLE Kickstarter Campaign is on its way to becoming one of the most successful indie film campaigns in crowd-funding history, but still has a long way to go.
Fewer than 1% of feature film related projects to pass through Kickstarter ever acquire more than $100,000 during a thirty day campaign. Hal Hartley's new campaign to finance the production of his newest film, NED RIFLE, achieved this in 6 days.
This is the realization of a long-term vision, not some new project coming out of nowhere. The film will conclude a trilogy of films that began almost 20 years ago, exploring how contemporary historical events have changed an atypical white-trash American family. It will reunite previous cast members Parker Posey, Thomas Jay Ryan, James Urbaniak, and Liam Aiken (who originated the role of Ned at 7 years old) in a tale about the Grim family of Woodside, Queens, and their preposterous and exasperating friend, husband, and father, Henry Fool.
Hartley, one of the more significant filmmakers of his generation, is running a crowd-funding Kickstarter campaign, inspired by the experience of working directly with some of his most passionate fans on a previous, but smaller, campaign to raise distribution funds for his film Meanwhile (2012). His newest project goes straight to fans rather than making the concessions required to finance the film through more traditional channels.
"This isn't just about making one film," says Hartley. "This is about establishing a better way of doing the business of being a creative person."
As of today, Hartley's campaign is 38% funded. He has fifteen days to go. If the goal of $384,000 he has set is not reached by December 4 he will receive nothing of what has been pledged. The incentives for pledging range from pre-buying the DVD of the completed film to a range of producer credits. In between there are autographed BluRays, the published Scenario, and a unique never before released hard cover book of Hartley's drawings.
Hartley has won numerous awards at, most notably, Cannes and Sundance. His films provided a career launch for a number of actors, including Edie Falco, Parker Posey, Martin Donovan, and the late Adrienne Shelly.
The current success of the campaign is helped by the brief and compelling videos Possible Films is posting every 48 hours on the company's website, www.possiblefilms.com, as well as YouTube, and the NED RIFLE Kickstarter project page itself. Made with Hartley's cast and crew, the videos come to be something like an open ended discussion about what it means to be creative people in a commercial world and tend to celebrate the kind of mercantilism Kickstarter provides services for.
