Former Vice President Dick Cheney is in the middle of a dispute over gay marriage between his two daughters.

Cheney's eldest daughter, Liz, is in a battle for the 2014 Republican primary in Wyoming against Sen. Mike Enzi, a politician who's opposed gay marriage throughout his three terms in the Senate.

In an appearance on "Fox News Sunday," Liz Cheney said she is opposed to legislation federally recognizing same-sex marriage and disagrees with her sister, Mary, on what constitutes the definition of marriage.

Mary is a lesbian who married her long-time partner in 2012 in Virginia. She has publicly dealt with her sister's anti-gay- marriage sentiment in the past by using Facebook. On Sunday she turned to the social media site once again to express her frustration with Liz.

"You're dead wrong," Mary posted on the social media site after Liz's comments on Fox News.

"I love my sister and her family and have always tried to be compassionate towards them," Liz told the Star-Tribune in an email. "I believe that is the Christian way to behave."

The fracas erupted into a nationwide media frenzy Sunday, and on Monday afternoon the former vice president and his wife, Lynn, put out a statement to try and help quell the drama.

"This is an issue we have dealt with privately for many years, and we are pained to see it become public," the statement read. "Since it has, one thing should be clear: Liz has always believed in the traditional definition of marriage. She has also always treated her sister and her sister's family with love and respect, exactly as she should have done. Compassion is called for, even when there is disagreement about such a fundamental matter and Liz's many kindnesses shouldn't be used to distort her position."

The family quarrel puts the former vice president in a tough spot. He has been stumping for Liz on the campaign trail since she decided to run in July, but he has also supported gay marriage as a states' rights issue since 2009.
