Family Video, Verite Cinema form local film section

November 12, 2013

Nov. 12--Verite Cinema and Family Video wanted to find another way to support local and independent filmmakers.

P.J. Starks, filmmaker and owner of the production company, reached out to Family Video about a local film section. It is scheduled to open next week.

"It's a community demand," said Dustin Wagner, store manager. "A lot of people come in and ask about local films, so we thought it was a great idea when P.J. brought it to us. There's great talent in this area."

The section will offer short and feature-length films, chiefly by Owensboro area filmmakers. The rentals will be free of charge.

"People hear about films being made here, but now they'll be able to take them home, enjoy them, and really see the level of creativity and production we have around us," Starks said. "Helping other filmmakers has been something I've done for a while and this is just another way. I'm pretty excited?about it."

So far, "Remaindered," "Bumsicle," "Girl Number 3," "Reality on Demand" and "Silence of the Bell" are among the rental options. Starks' films "Hallows Eve" and "A Mind Beside Itself" will also be in the section. Some will be international films or from other states, such as "Potpourri," "Hunting Buddies" and a few horror anthologies.

Verite Cinema and Family Video have partnered before on such projects as Starks' "Unscripted" film series at the Daviess County Public Library, which the store co-sponsored. One of the series' events was also a fundraiser for the video store's contribution to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

"We're a community video store, so we try to help wherever possible," Wagner said. "And we promote local films and events to our customers, things like that."

Wagner said he hopes the local film section will be a permanent addition to the store. Starks has 16 films so far. The men are hoping for a total of 20 films to open the section.

Interested filmmakers can contact Starks at or The initial deadline is Friday.
