Oct. 09--Rivertowne Players' youth group, the Rising Stars, opens the first of six performances of "The Little Mermaid Jr." on Friday.

It is based on the Hans Christian Anderson story and the Disney film produced by Howard Ashman and John Musker.

The story goes to a magical kingdom fathoms below the sea, where the beautiful young mermaid Ariel -- played by Georgie Blackerby -- longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above.

But first she will have to defy her father King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince Prince Eric -- played by Dalton Dziwanowski -- that she is the girl with the enchanting voice.

The book is by Doug Wright; music by Alan Menken; lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and adapted from Disney's 2008 Broadway production, "The Little Mermaid, JR."

It features the hit songs, "Part of Your World," "She's in Love," and the Oscar-winning "Under the Sea." The show is being presented by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

It is directed by Aaron Williams, produced by Terry Daniels, with vocal direction by Kim Scott and choreography by Derek Jordan.

Tickets are $10 in advance and are available at the Bank of the Arts on Middle Street. Call 638-2577. Tickets at the door are $12 and $10 students with valid school ID.
