Italy'sEmilia Romagna region is planning to install a fibre optic network for households and businesses, providing ultra high speed broadband connections. The initiative is part of the larger UltraNet project that will set up an ad hoc infrastructure that will also include the existing Lepida Network. The municipality of Pieve di Cento, located between Bologna and Ferrara, and telecom operators (starting from Nexus) will create an infrastructure that will operational by end-2013. The new infrastructure will initially make available bandwidth of 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps. The infrastructure includes equipment that is already capable of supporting connections with speeds up to 1 Gbps to end users, including VoIP and cable TV.
