Oct. 30--SCF music program will present 'The Music Man'

BRADENTON -- State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota Music Program will present one of the most beloved musicals of all time, "The Music Man" by Meredith Willson, at 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in Neel Performing Arts Center at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W.

"The Music Man" made its debut on Broadway in 1957 and won five Tony Awards. The nostalgic, heartwarming comedy is about a con man, Harold Hill, whose scam involves convincing the people of River City, Iowa, to buy band instruments with a promise to create and instruct a boys band. His wild scheme is flawed when he meets a beautiful and clever librarian, Marian Paroo, who rebuffs his advances and vows to prove he is a fraud to the small town.

With memorable tunes such as "Seventy-Six Trombones," "'Till There Was You," "Ya Got Trouble" and "Gary, Indiana," The Music Man has achieved iconic theatrical status.

Members of the SCF creative team include Melodie Dickerson, director; Rex Willis, music director; and Kelly Burnette, choreographer. The 40-member cast includes SCF students, faculty, community members and Electa Lee Magnet Middle School students.

The Music Man is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
