Local horror film to premiere on Halloween

October 28, 2013

Oct. 28--While pint-sized zombies and superheroes scour the city for Halloween treats, the older crowd can get their horror fix, too.

Daniel Benedict's "Bunni" will premiere at 7 p.m. Oct. 31 at Malco Cinema 16, 5333 Frederica St. The screening is in partnership with Owensboro's Verite Cinema.

The slasher film, Benedict's homage to 1980 horror movies like "Friday the 13th," centers on a group of friends and their post-Halloween party findings. On their way home, the friends discover an abandoned building and go inside, against their better judgment.

"I think people will be very entertained by it," Benedict said. "There's no dullness; it's action-packed."

Benedict filmed "Bunni" around Owensboro. The cast and crew are also composed of local talents including Mercedez Varble as the main character, Kent Blue and Alexandria Hendrick.

It's Benedict's eighth film venture since the mid-1990s. It's the first film he's made since 2000, and at 70 minutes, it's his longest yet.

"Bunni" first screened in September at Power-Con, an expo dedicated to Masters of the Universe, Princess of Power, ThunderCats and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans and collectors, in Torrance, Calif.

Benedict is the audio/visual coordinator of the convention and also designed the Castle Grayskullman action figure for Mattel. It was revealed in 2012 at Comic-Con in San Diego.

He said though the convention focuses on animation, there was room for a little spook.

"The feedback about the film was really positive," Benedict said. "People said it reminded them of '80s horror, which is huge for me because that's what I'm inspired by. I'm really grateful they gave me the opportunity to screen there."

With help from local filmmaker P.J. Starks, founder of Verite Cinema, Benedict was able to arrange the screening at Malco.

"Everyone has been really supportive, so I'm excited about to see where it goes," Benedict said.

Tickets are $5 and will be available at the theater. To buy in advance, see
