Cuban Diplomat Dr. Jose Cabanas Meets International Child Custody Attorney Jeffery M. Leving In Chicago

CHICAGO, Oct. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Jose R. Cabanas, the highest- ranking Cuban official in the United States met with famed Chicago matrimonial attorney Jeffery M. Leving Wednesday October 23(rd) at a special event hosted by the Council on Latin American Relations. Leving, an internationally known Chicago custody attorney, was instrumental in reuniting Elian Gonzalez with his father in Cuba.


"It was a great honor to meet Dr. Cabanas. Helping Elian return to his loving father in Cuba was one of my proudest moments as an attorney," states Leving. "I believe that father/child relations should be independent of political issues."

To secure Elian's return to his father, Leving worked cooperatively with Johanna Tablada, a former director of U.S. affairs at Cuba's Foreign Ministry. Tablada was recently named the Cuban Ambassador to Portugal. Leving also represented Elian's great uncle, Manuel Gonzalez, in hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee concerning Elian's plight at the invitation of Senators Ted Kennedy and Patrick Leahy.

During Cabanas' historical visit to Chicago, he met with the city's leaders to discuss the future for US relations with Cuba and potential opportunities for collaboration.

Leving who has family that once resided in San Antonio de los Banos, looks forward to visiting Cuba as invited by Dr. Cabanas.
