Oct. 21--"My Cabaret," a performance of dance, drama and music by local teens, will be presented by Minnesota Ballet Theatre Friday through Sunday at Rochester Civic Theatre.
The production was co-written by Ellen Huston, artistic director of Minnesota Ballet Theatre, and 18-year-old Jeff Kosharek, a local writer/actor. In addition to performances by teen dancers, the show also features 15-year-old singer/songwriter Elle Pollock.
In "My Cabaret," a harried and well-intentioned director tries to pull his cast together for an opening night performance.
Dance performances will include jazz and ballet by Minnesota Ballet Theatre's pre-professional soloists. The company's pre-professional dancers also appeared in "TeenAge WasteLand" last February.
Pollock is a Lourdes High School student who released her first CD of all-original material last summer. Kosharek is a former Teen Beat columnist for the Post-Bulletin and had a lead role in "Kill Me Deadly" last spring at Rochester Civic Theatre.
"It's wonderful working with such a diverse group of talented young people," Huston said. "The best part for me is watching these young artists interact and genuinely enjoy each other's talents."
The collaborative nature of the production gives young artists an opportunity they might not normally have, Huston said. "It can be difficult for younger performing artists and arts organizations to have access to legitimate performance opportunities," she said. "They don't have enough material, experience or money to produce a show."
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Rochester Civic Theatre, 20 Civic Center Drive S.E. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students, available at the RCT box office, by phone at 507-282-8481, and online at www.rochestercivictheatre.org.
