Thinking of switching from Microsoft Office at the office? There was a time, not so long ago, when suggesting this would have you quietly taken away, while indignant management tut-tutted behind your back.
Terrified of any change that might make them somehow incompatible with their customers' files, businesses never gave much support to the likes of Lotus Smartsuite or WordPerfect Office, despite these being rooted in enterprise spreadsheet and word-processor programs that were market leaders long before Excel or Word. Today, they remain only as niche products for a faithful few.

It's also a lot more difficult today thanks to software activation that permanently locks a program to a particular computer. If you can't copy Office, what can you do? Copy Office.
