Paul Shemmell of
Shemmells entry is a Windows 8 Desktop App for DADS (Dyscalculia and Dyslexia Support). Round 1 confirmation enabled him to win the hardware, a Lenovo ThinkPad tablet 2, to create the app. He must now submit a Proof of Concept to the judges by the end of October to join the last 30 contestants in Round 2. Round 3 will be a video submission. The competition is broken down into six categories: entertainment, games, education, healthcare, finance and retail.
DADS will be a WPF C# Windows 8 desktop application that aids children with dyslexia and dyscalculia to overcome their learning disorder. It will attempt to coach them into using the correct letters in a spelling game, and help with the basics of arithmetic. A Genus Systems client responsible for the care and educational support of disabled children, will user-test the system.

Commenting on his success so far and the work he has previously carried out relevant to his app idea, he said: To get this far against 4000 entries is very exciting and although Ive entered the competition as an individual, the outcome will obviously benefit Genus Systems as well, so Im looking forward to the next stage. Although Genus creates bespoke software solutions for a variety of clients we have developed a niche in the health and education sectors. My university dissertation, which looked at ways of developing cheap, generic hardware to use as in-home remote monitoring solutions for disabled and elderly patients, has helped in developing my Round 2 app.
