We don't know the long-term consequences of genetically modified products.
Having said that, I would like to know what I am buying at the store so I can choose.
Long-term consequences are slim in terms of health risks.
Besides that, convincing people of safety is a case of moving goal posts. No matter how much research or testing is done, people who either don't understand genetics or are paranoid will always think there needs to be more data.
There is one -- and only one -- main reason why foodmakers would be against labeling. They have something big to hide.
Humans have been genetically modifying foods by crossbreeding for thousands of years.
There should be some indication that genetically modified organisms are bad (all around) because there are many countries that are banning the use of certain GMO crops and imports.
I would have no problem with making food companies label GMOs.
Of course, many products in the supermarket have been genetically modified at some point, so there would be labels all over the place.
If products require labeling for the basic ingredients, why would adding GMO information be any different?
Many ingredients in the food industry have little to do with making products healthful anyway.
