Dr. Alavi Responds to "Fat Freezing" Treatment

SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/24/13 -- Although the concept of freezing fat cells to encourage their natural death and subsequent decrease in a patient's size has existed since the 1970s, a new treatment known as CoolSculpting has gained notable popularity in the United States of America, according to a recent article from The Telegraph. The procedure has become a preferable option among men who want to forgo an invasive liposuction or surgery, as well as among women who want to target specific areas such as "love handles, muffin tops, the thighs and arms." Although not regarded as a weight-loss treatment, CoolSculpting was approved by the FDA in 2010. This relatively new approach is one that has won the attention of leading San Diego, California plastic surgeon Dr. Alavi.

The article explains the nature of the procedure and states, "Those seeking a pre-emptive strike against the festive bulge are hooked up to a machine that uses vacuum pressure and deep cooling to target fat below the skin, freezing unwanted fat cells in the waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, arms and back." Patients can undergo the non-invasive procedure in as little as one hour, and since "lipids crystallize faster than normal cells" they will not experience damage to surrounding nerves or tissues. Dr. Alavi comments, "I find the concept to be very interesting and innovative. Freezing fat cells has been tried by several groups but none have been as successful as CoolSculpting."

The advantages of CoolSculpting are noted to have caused an increase in patient interest, specifically the relatively low cost of the procedure -- which the article estimates at about $750 per session. In addition to the affordability and non-invasive nature of the procedure, many find that it is a good way to target smaller areas of fat or take a pre-emptive strike at a developing bulge. However, Dr. Alavi explains that this procedure is not one that is a right choice for every patient.

Dr. Alavi concludes by describing the ideal CoolSculpting patient as one that is "20 to 40 years of age with great skin elasticity and minimal to moderate fat pocket." He also notes that prospective patients must also avoid disappointment by remaining informed that, realistically, only a 20 percent improvement can be achieved.

Dr. Alavi is a successful plastic surgeon who has served many satisfied clients as the Head Cosmetic Surgeon at the Center for Cosmetic Surgery in San Diego, located in Southern California.
