ARCADIA, WI -- (Marketwire) -- 08/27/12 -- As we usher out another summer filled with barbecues, vacations, and late-night video games, parents and kids everywhere are scurrying to get back into the swing of back-to-school time. With plenty of new challenges to conquer, not to mention piles of homework, after-school activities and other demands, it's important for kids to get the sleep they need.

"Good sleep can lead to good results in the classroom and beyond," says Ben Thorud, Senior Vice President of Ashley Sleep. "While many well-meaning parents wouldn't think of letting their kids eat junk food every meal or participate in unsafe activities, many don't see a problem with allowing them to stay up late. But research suggests that more than 2/3 of children suffer from some kind of sleep issue, which can lead to drowsiness, obesity, inability to focus, substandard academic performance, irritability, low self-esteem and more."

As we put the summer behind us and try to get back on a healthy schedule, there are some simple things you can do to help make mornings go a little more smoothly:

Soak up the early-morning sun. Opening up the shades before the alarm clock goes off sends a signal to the brain that it's time to get moving. Eating breakfast outside is also a good way to give kids the energy they need to get to the school bus on time. •Prepare brain-boosting meals. Foods like eggs, oatmeal, fat-free milk, strawberries, blueberries, lean meats and whole-wheat sandwiches give your kids a healthy advantage. Make sure your children are drinking plenty of water throughout the day, as well. •Don't back-track on weekends. Letting kids make up for lost sleep on the weekends may seem like a good idea, but it may actually undermine your attempts to get them back on schedule. A better solution would be to keep a regular wake-up time on weekdays and weekends. •Set an example. Children aren't the only ones who benefit from a good night's sleep! Try to keep a regular sleep routine so you can seize your day and have the energy you need to get them (and yourself) going in the morning.
